My first experience with fine violins was at the age of 14. Musician friends took me to a recital by Mischa Elman. This was a great musical event at that time(1946) he was the first international violinist to visit my town after World War II. At the end of the concert we went to speak with Elman, when several people asked to see and possibly hold his violin. He very kindly allowed some of us to draw the bow over the strings and play a few notes - it was enough to change my life forever. I think Elman was using the `Swan' Strad on that evening.
Since then I have spent an evening with David Oistrakh, who had with him his magnificent Strad. On another occasion I spent an afternoon with Wolfgang Schneiderhan who had two beautiful Strads with him that day.
During the last fifty years I have played on any number of instruments by the best makers and have never lost the excitement of the occasion. Many international violinists have visited my home bringing with them as many wonderful violins, Bergonzi, Petrus Guanerius (two in one day) Techler, Amati, Pedrazini, Testore, Gragnani, Grancino, Gagliano, Guadagnini, Silvestre and many more.
Each instrument is a new and exciting experience and with that instrument it is always the first time, even if I have played several examples of the same makers work. Of all the violins I have heard or played, I would choose the `Plowden' del Gesu (1735) used by Ruiggiero Ricci on the LP The "Glory of Cremona" (1964) In a BBC broadcast "Desert Island Discs" Ricci himself said that he preferred this instrument to the others he used on the LP recital. Of the violins I have played myself I would choose the Testore mentioned in the last paragraph
Now, both José Sánchez-Penzo and myself would like your help.
The earliest examples of naming violins on 78rpm record labels are on recordings by Jan Kubelik circa 1910 , these labels state that he is playing the Emperor Strad. A few years later a label on a Columbia recording of the violinist Leo Strockoff states that he is playing Sarasate's violin.
There will no doubt be others and it would be interesting to know if any readers of this article know of any other 78s where the violin being used is named.
Today there are several LPs and CDs available of whole collections played on famous violins. The first modern example that comes to mind is the "Glory of Cremona" recital on which Ruggerio Ricci plays fifteen famous violins. There is also a similar LP on Erato STU 71146 (Sep 1977) "Les Instruments Précieux du Musée du Conservatoire Vol 2" of Pierre Amoyal playing several well known violins. The violins listed on Amoyal's recording are Amati (1639), Strad `Provigny' (1716), Del Gesu (1742), Strad `Le Saraste' (1724), Strad modčle `Longuet' (1699) and Strad `Le Davidoff' (1708) Every now and then an LP or CD can be found where the violin being used is mentioned. I am sure for many of us this is an added pleasure.
So Jose Sanchez and I, will with your help, compile what we think is the first discography of recordings which specifically name the violin being used.
Please look through your collection for any mention of the violin used to make a recording, then e-mail the details, of course we will credit the item with your name. Or if you know of any documentation stating which violin was used for a particular recording e-mail this page with the information. At a later date we will publish a list of as much of this information as possible, then all those curious listeners can have the information they may have been looking for years. But please do not assume that because a certain violinist was using or owned a particular violin at the time the recording was made that he/she was in fact using that violin for the recording, that would then be speculation and not fact.
Berthier (1716) by Stradivari, A. (Violin)

This instrument is perhaps one of the most perfect Stradivari violins. Having belonged to the Peterlongo Collection the 'Berthier' Stradivari was the beloved instrument of Franz von Vecsey (Ferenc de Vecsey), a real giant of the bow, for his classical and stylish approach, full of restrained passion. As a matter of fact the 'Berthier' is now entrusted to Franco Gulli, who is playing it all over the world.

Maestro Suk told me it was his 1710 Strad. This recording, apart from being the definitive version of his great-grandfathers concerto, is one of the half dozen or so most perfect recordings ever made. All other versions of this concerto can be judged by this outstanding achievement of this artist. Ex General Dupont (1727) by Stradivari, A. (Violin)
1 | Grumiaux, Arthur | - | 1) Bach: Six Solo Sonatas and Partitas | Philips | PHS 2 -900 | 1965 | "His Stradivarius has a noble name. The instrument is called 'Ex-General Dupont' 1727. I believe that an ex-general in France, by the name of Dupont, was the first known owner of Arthur Grumiaux's fabulous violin. This high-ranking military man must have been somebody of considerable means and taste. In our day there are not many ex-generals who could afford to buy a Stradivarius, on the strengh of their pensions, and endow it with their name." | "It took Grumiaux a long time to find the instrument that would match his artistic feelings and techniques best. I still remember the moment when the news about his discovery of 'Ex-General Dupont 1727' reached us. I also remember his happiness about it and that of his wife Amanda, who knows a lot about violins herself and even more about what her husband wants to accomplish in his art." Liegnitz (1711) by Stradivari, A. (Violin)
1 | Goldberg, Szymon | Kraus, Lili/Riddle, Frederick/Hindemith, Paul | 1) Beethoven: Sonatas | 2) Mozart: Sonatas | 3) Mozart: Duos | Music & Arts | CD-665 | ? | This recording was made from the 78s Parlephone/Odeon (1935-1940) and English Columbia (1934). | Contributed by (A).
According to the booklet of the 3CD set | [2]., Goldberg acquired the Liegnitz about the time he moved to Berlin in 1930 and played it on all the recordings in this set (various Mozart and Beethoven Sonatas, plus the two Mozart Duos). The booklet goes on to say that he played the Baron Vitta del Gesu from the 1950s. Also, it relates a story that when Goldberg and Kraus were touring in the Far East in 1942 they were interned by the Japanese on Java. When the Goldbergs were captured by the Japenese, the house in Djakarta where they were staying would have been sealed up, but luckily there was a sick woman in thehouse so the invaders left her there. She rescued the Strad and dumped it over the fence into the garden of an amateur violinist, who in turn passed it on to a Swiss family - and they as citizens of a neutral country were able to keep it and return it to Goldberg after the war.

At the start of the project the violin I was playing on was my beautiful Guarneri del Gesu of around 1740--'Ex Sauret'. However, after the recording was underway I was most fortunate to acquire the Antonio Stradivari 'Soil' of 1714. I could not resist using this magnificent instrument on record at the first opportunity: the C major and A minor Sonatas became that opportunity. People often ask which I prefer to play: the Stradivarius or the Guarnerius. I must admit that although each instrument has its own unique qualities and characteristics, I find it a great pleasure to change from one to the other and I certainly love playing them both." 1 | Markov, Alexander | - | 1) Paganini: 24 Caprices op 1 | Erato | 2292-45502-2 | 1989 | A monumental recording of a modern violin by Sergio Peresson who's qualities equate to the best of the Cremonese instruments. And is also a spectacular recording of the violinist Alexander Markov - the son of the violinist Albert Markov. These performances of the Paganini caprices wili leave you dazzled by Markov's outstanding technique. During a long conversation with Alexander Markov after a concert in Liverpool he told me that he was using and had recorded these caprices on a modern violin by Peresson. There is also a video available of Markov performing the Caprices at the Theatre de Reggio Emilia on 3rd May 1989 when this recording was made - so you can see this wonderful violin being played. An added bonus with the video is to see Markovs phenomenal bow control - a definitive recording of violin sound. | Contributed by (F).

1 | Stewart, Malcolm | Royal Scottish Orchestra/Davies, D. + Handley, V. | 1) Mackenzie, A.: Violin Concerto in C sharp minor op 32 | 2) Mackenzie, A.: Pibroch Suite | Hyperion | CDA66975 | - | I was invited by Boris Belkin to attend his recent concert in the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall when he gave a very exciting performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. After the concert I spent some time with Boris Belkin and the leader of the RLPO Malcolm Stewart. Boris Belkin showed me his Guardagnini, a very fine example of this masters work that had once belonged to Issac Stern. Beklin has used this violin on all his recordings so far. Malcolm Stewart and I then discussed this recording and he showed me the violin he had used for the recording a Stephano Scarampella made in 1905. With the assistance of this comparatively modern violin Malcom Steward makes one of the best violin sounds to be heard anywhere today. | Contributed by (F).
